The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL (Posthumously) to

SECOND LIEUTENANT WALTER JOHN LYONS

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

For service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company E, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force, in Vietnam on 15 June 1967. Second Lieutenant LYONS was leading a reconnaissance patrol during Operation Arizona in Quang Nam Province. While moving through a heavily fortified area, the platoon point became heavily engaged by a well entrenched enemy force, which was supported by four heavy caliber automatic weapons, 82mm mortars and B-40 anti-tank rockets. Second Lieutenant LYONS immediately moved forward to aid his pinned down unit and, during the ensuing firefight, effectively maneuvered his troops toward the enemy, enabling them to inflict heavy enemy casualties. This aggressive action forced the enemy to disclose his anti-tank weapons prematurely, which resulted in their destruction. Later, while in the process of effecting a consolidation, Second Lieutenant LYONS moved along a 100 meter front, aiding casualties and directing fire. Observing two friendly casualties exposed to his front, he rushed forward to their aid and was mortally wounded. By his outstanding courage, leadership and unyielding devotion to duty, Second Lieutenant LYONS served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.”

FOR THE PRESIDENT,

PAUL R. IGNATUIS

SECRETARY OF THE NAVY
